This is the preview build — the same app that goes to the Play Store, installed directly. Android only for now.

Android 7+ · 117 MB · everything is inside it — the 39,000-entry dictionary, all six levels, the stories — so nothing downloads later and nothing needs a signal.
(It's this big because one file has to carry every phone chip; the Play Store version will be roughly half, because Play sends each phone only its own share.)

Tap the button on your Android phone (not a desktop).
Chrome will warn that this file type can harm your device — it's an app installer, so tap Download anyway.
Open the file. If Android says Chrome isn't allowed to install apps, tap Settings and switch on Allow from this source, then go back.
Play Protect will offer to scan it — let it, then tap Install anyway. It says that about every app not yet downloaded from the Play Store.
Open Lernen. There's no sign-up: pick a level and start.

Why the warnings? Android shows them for any app installed outside the Play Store, whatever is inside it. the only permission Lernen ever asks you for is the microphone, and only inside the pronunciation exercise. It sends nothing anywhere — the privacy policy is one sentence long. If you'd rather wait for the Play Store version, email me and I'll tell you when it's up.

German gender can't be worked out from meaning, so it has to be drilled. Every noun in Lernen is taught with its article, spoken aloud with it, and the Artikel drill makes it a daily ten from your own level.

A course, not a pile of flashcards

Each lesson walks eight words up a ladder: meet them, recognise them, build them from their letters, then produce them cold. Grammar is woven through in course order.

Type German without a German keyboard

schoen counts as schön, ss counts as ß — everywhere. The umlaut keyboard can come later.

Built on a real schedule

Reviews use FSRS — the modern spaced-repetition algorithm Anki uses — bringing a word back exactly when you're about to forget it.

Twenty ways to practise

A Modelltest, offline

Timed and sectioned — Wortschatz, Grammatik, Hören — generated fresh from your level each attempt, at the real 60% pass line. It rehearses the shape of the day.

Honest levels

The bands are frequency bands, built from how German is really used — not the Goethe lists, which aren't openly licensed. At every level you learn the most useful words you don't know yet.

Every grammar point, story and sentence frame was reviewed by a German speaker before release, and the corrections are in the app. Your progress is yours: back it up to a file you choose, restore it on a new phone. Nothing is sent anywhere, ever.
